The Hoop Shoot has been unleashing gritty kids for 51 years.
Age: The contest is open to boys and girls age 8 – 13
Groups: There will be six groups competing at the event. The groups include three age brackets of 8- and 9-year-old boys, 8- and 9-year-old girls, 10- and 11-year-old boys, 10- and 11-year old girls, 12- and 13-year-old boys, and 12- and 13-year old girls. What age groups the contestants will compete in will be determined by the contestants age. For example, if a contestant is actually 9-years-old at the time of the contest in January, but turns 10 before April 1st, they will compete in the 10-11 year-old group.
Basketball Size: the 8-9 age group will use 24″ circumference basketballs, while the other age groups (10-11, 12-13) will use regulation size basketballs. All balls will have 7-9 lbs. of pressure.
Scoring: The contest will consist of 25 scored throws. The contestants will, in order, take up to 5 practice throws that will not be scored, and then proceed to take 10 scored throws. A thrown ball that falls through the top of the hoop will be counted as a point. Once the contestant has taken 10 throws, they will sit out and wait for the rest of the contestants to have their practice and 10 scored throws. When it is the contestants turn again, he/she will take the remaining 15 scored throws. If at anytime the contestant goes over the foul line for his/her age group while taking a scored shot, the throw will be counted as a miss regardless of the outcome of the throw. Judges scoring the event will record successful throws for each contestant, and give the results to the Local Hoop Shoot Director.
Awards: Awards will be given to the 1st and 2nd place contestants of each local Lodge’s age group based on total number of successful throws. The 1st place contestants of each group will then compete in the local Lodge’s District State Hoop Shoot Contest.
